Event Details

Tomatoes peppers and eggplant
Want to beef up your beefsteaks, avoid common tomato diseases, and have the most bountiful crop ever? Or are you ready to move on to the more esoteric members of the nightshade family, peppers and eggplants? Learn how to manage “heat” in peppers, and how to give your eggplants a great start in life. Topics include variety selection, good planting practices, managing irrigation needs, common pests and diseases, and what to do when the harvest rolls in.

Co-presenter UC Master Gardener Nancy Grove:  Nancy Grove gardens on the mid-Peninsula, with a focus on water-wise perennial plantings, small fruit orchard, and raised beds. She raises essentially all of the produce needed for her family, canning and preserving to extend the harvest year-round. A founding member of the San Mateo/San Francisco Master Gardener Program, Nancy enjoys giving talks about various aspects of gardening, learning a great deal from her audiences in return.

Co-presenter UC Shilpa Thanawala:  A San Carlos-based Master Gardener, Shilpa enjoys growing much of her own fresh produce to cook and bake a wide variety of creative and delicious dishes. Her space-efficient and chemical-free home garden contains over 30 varieties of fruit trees, canes, and shrubs. As a San Francisco native, Shilpa also has a deep appreciation for the Bay Area’s unique climate and ecology, and is passionate about sustainable and environmentally beneficial approaches to gardening.
