Do you love roses and want to learn more about them? In this class, tips for growing roses organically on the SF Peninsula will be discussed. We will help you choose the correct rose and style types, offer planting tips as well as optimal pruning techniques and timing. We will give suggestions on how to fertilize organically and include an overview of common rose diseases and how to best deal with them. We will also discuss the history and symbolism of roses. Questions are welcome. Please bring in samples of your roses in a sealed plastic bag for discussion.
Presenter UC Master Gardener Patti Spezzaferro:PattiSpezzaferro is a Master Gardener with an AA degree in Horticulture from Foothill College. She has been gardening since she was a little girl and has always been fascinated with roses. She speaks regularly on How to Grow Organic Roses in the Bay Areaand Why We Love Roses at such venues as Lyngso, Genentech, Filoli, Peninsula Rose Society and the San Francisco Flower Show. She holds a Bachelor's Arts degree in Art History and was a graphic designer for ten years.
Presenter UC Master Gardener Stu Dalton: Stu Dalton is a UCCE Master Gardener, who has given a number of rose-related talks and demonstrations for over 30 years. He is the current Peninsula Rose Society President and an American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian. He grows about 200 roses and almost as many Orchids in Menlo Park as well as many other plants. Over the years he has moved to more Integrated Pest Management and less spraying with good success.
