The Year-Round Edible Garden - Winter 2019
August 24, 2019 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Master Gardener Gardening Education Center at San Mateo Event Center (next to the Jockey Club)
Sponsor: Master Gardeners of San Mateo & San Francisco
Description: Our mild Mediterranean climate allows us to easily grow vegetables year-round. This class will help you focus on the wonderful fresh garden vegetables that you can enjoy in the winter by using the Planting Calendars for San Mateo and San Francisco Counties available for downloading from the Master Gardener website.
You will learn to sequence your planting schedule and choose winter edibles. We will “crack” and plant certified seed garlic, learn how to grow potatoes in pots, and discuss details of growing onions. A hands-on exercise will teach you how to make and use low tunnels for season extension.
Guests will take home an edible seedling ready for their home garden, grown by UC Master Gardeners.
Presenter Master Gardener Carol O'Donnell: Carol is a long time resident of San Mateo. She became a Master Gardener Volunteer in 2006. In 2008 she led a Tomato Trial located two blocks from the ocean on Kelly Avenue in Half Moon Bay. For 15 years, she maintained a plot at Beresford Community Garden. She also gardens at her home and particularly enjoys growing vegetables. Her motto is, “If I can’t eat it, I’m not interested.”
