Integrated Pest Management Project
Address: Various hardware and home improvement stores
Integrated Pest Management education is not currently offered due to COVID-19.
The Integrated Pest Management Project was sponsored by Flows to the Bay and is part of the San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program. San Mateo County would like to decrease the amount of toxic materials in sewer run-off to the San Francisco Bay and using IPM methods is a great way to begin to accomplish this. UC Master Gardeners were asked to support this effort by staffing a table in the garden section of various hardware and home improvement stores to aid in this effort.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools in a way that minimizes economic, health and environmental risks.
Master Gardeners staff table at various hardware and home improvement stores with educational material and samples of chemicals deemed environmentally safe for gardens, humans and animals. Our goals are to demonstrate:
- Alternative chemicals to use in the garden besides Round-Up
- Safe and sustainable methods for getting rid of yard pests
