This practical class is designed to give first-time home gardeners hands-on knowledge to successfully plant a fall veggie garden. Includes growing tips for selected vegetables that do well in this area, building a versatile raised bed, water needs, soil mixtures, growing seedlings, pointers for purchasing healthy starts, spacing and planting calendar, protection from pests, and the value of weekly monitoring of growth.
Come Early: Join us between 9am and 1pm for the Fall Plant Sale in front of the Veterans Senior Center. Fall vegetable plants appropriate for the local microclimate raised by Master Gardeners will be on sale along with cover crop seeds and some herbs.
About our expert UC Master Gardener Presenters:
Lisa Putnam: Lisa has a BS in Agricultural Economics from UC Davis, and also studied nutrition science. She currently operates a sustainable organic farm in Woodside, and is a UC Master Gardener and Master Composter. Lisa teaches both summer and winter vegetable gardening at several Bay Area locations.
Kathleen Putnam: Kathleen is a professional organic vegetable gardener serving the Mid- Peninsula. She is an Int’l Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist, and has a degree in Environmental Horticulture from City College of San Francisco.
This class is offered in partnership with the UCCE Master Gardener Program of San Mateo & San Francisco Counties and the Redwood City Veterans Memorial Senior Center.
